Crash diets… we’ve all been there. And how often do we stick with them? For me, they always lasted about a week or two before giving up and indulging in all of the food that I had been craving. I always blamed my weight on my diagnosis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and I always had an event coming up in my life that would stop me from “starting tomorrow.” This lifestyle had gotten me to my highest weight, and I was no longer comfortable in my clothes, pictures, and most social settings.

But what makes people want to make a change for good? For yourself, and not the people around you? My turning point was looking back on pictures from an amazing trip abroad that I had taken for school. To have such amazing memories, yet only seeing how unhealthy I looked, was such a pivotal moment in my life. I decided to reach out to family and friends for help because I knew if I didn’t have someone holding me responsible for my actions, I wouldn’t be able to make the change I wanted to.

Six months into changing what I ate, incorporating exercise, and enjoying a cheat meal once a week has improved my health beyond what I could have expected. My weight, bad cholesterol, sugar levels, free floating testosterone (associated with PCOS) have all decreased drastically, along with my risk for cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and osteoporosis. My skin has also cleared up beyond what I could have ever imagined, and my energy level has increased dramatically. Along with all of this, I was able to stop taking medications that were keeping these risks at bay, all because I changed my lifestyle.
