Everyone always said “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” I know that is a heavily debated statement now – but I wanted to tell you why it is my favorite meal of the day, and the different things I enjoy to start my day on the right foot!
Over the past year and a half, I have found myself enjoying waking up early to have some peace and quiet before my day begins. Since I wake up at least two hours before I leave the house, I have the time to make whatever I want. After I brush my teeth and wash my face, I sit down on the couch and slowly sip my coffee while scrolling through Instagram. This is how I enjoy waking up, and having my massive cup of joe helps to set my tone for the day. I don’t always eat breakfast at home, but having that first meal – whatever time that might be at – helps me set the tone of my meals for the rest of the day as well. A good breakfast helps me to continue to make good decisions for lunch and dinner!
Now I will start by saying that at least 3 days out of the week, I’m enjoying a chocolate protein shake with 12 ounces of unsweetened almond milk. This isn’t because I’m rushing, but because I LOVE Ancient Nutrition Bone Broth Protein Powder – chocolate specifically because it tastes like a friggin’ milkshake… and who doesn’t love a milkshake?!
My next favorite breakfast is a homemade smoothie bowl. These are great to make at home because you control what is going into it and the portion that you make. PLUS it’s so much less expensive to make at home!!! I use frozen berries, fresh spinach, and unsweetened almond milk as my base. I always top it with organic peanut butter, unsweetened coconut flakes, chia seeds, and ground flax seeds. This gives me a serving of fruit and veggies, fiber, and healthy fat. That is the best way to start the day!!
While those are my favorite weekday breakfasts, my weekend breakfast is just as simple. I’ve mentioned before, I love cooking but I don’t love wasting time in the kitchen. This is why I will hold onto any leftover veggies or protein from the week, mix that in with some eggs, and viola! I ALWAYS top my eggs with 1/2 of an avocado and everything but the bagel seasoning. I like to cook my eggs with coconut oil, as that is a super healthy fat, and I feel like it helps to make my eggs a bit fluffier and sooo delicious!
Now I do intermittent fasting every day, and I have come to find that the longer I’ve been doing it, the later in the morning I am enjoying one of these meals. But if I find that I am unable to take any of the above meals to work with me, I will just have a second cup of coffee with coconut oil and organic, grass fed butter (bullet proof coffee). Now this might sound nasty to those who’ve never had it – I was skeptical at first too. But I can honestly say this keeps me satisfied for HOURS on end, it’s delicious, and it’s a great alternative for breakfast in my opinion. I take this to go, and slowly sip on it throughout the morning at work. It helps me to stay focused on my work and not how hungry I’ll be in an hour.
How do you like to start off your day? Let me know what your favorite breakfast is and I will give it a try!
